Social Media In Education

Image result for social media images for website small sizes   I'm Carline, I am a Sophomore at St Francis College and my major is Health Promotion and Science. I have been interested to talk about social media which is a huge topic to be a concern nowadays.

Social media might be a way to interact and communicate, but it is also the same thing that could stop you from doing what is more important in life.

Has social media ever affected your school education?

I am not from the United States, where I come from school is always the 1st priority, and the last thing that could help you have a suitable life, and successful life. Where I came from, there isn't much light or internet that could be a distraction for students to study. We only use our time to study and attend school every, we never have the access to it either. For sure everyone has access to a phone, but what is the use of it if you can't even go to social media without the internet problem. Without social media, we don't know what is going on outside the world. Not everyone who can't access technology, the only problem is the internet, however, not having social media to distract you all the time is a little better because it makes you spend more time with family.

I am a person that is very attached to my phone, but however back from home, I never feel that a phone has this much importance until I came to the States then get distracted from everything especially from schools who I was so focused on.

Since I arrived here, has been helping me interact with more people outside my race. I have become more open and comfortable when meeting people on the internet. Even though social media is very useful and quick to use but does it help with education? Some of us will say yes and no, but what I think is social media slow down our education. Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, any other media are some of the reasons we are doing poorly in school. I could have done more for my grades, study more, or improve my intelligence but instead, I choose to waste my time on things that could do nothing for me or my future.

Social media is not all bad, it's just that people spend too much time on it. Nowadays, kids spend more time looking at the screen than opening a book. Digital media could have been more helpful to help education but whenever we use it, it changes its course about education. Instead of helping students improve and complete their work much faster, social media is taking all their time, and unfortunately, it really affects their education. As for me, I have been trying to get back to the way things used to be, back to how it was in my country. Focus on schools and avoid using social media is one of my priorities right now.

There were many other blogs to talk about, but I choose social media in consideration of education. Growing up, I have always heard from my parents that I should take schools very seriously in other to be successful. I know school is not the only thing that can help with achievements, but for my parents, it is the only way. They believe that school is the easy way, which is true, and as for me I should finish all my education. I write this blog to give my thoughts on how impactful and unfortunately social media can be for education.

I am still a student in college therefore I have a class to take into consideration. Due to what my major is I have to take classes related to social networking. One of them is Digital humanities, which are tools that help people with study and learning about history, science, physiology, and literature. Digitals humanities are one of the best ways to help students learn, experience, and create new things in the human world. Moreover, digital humanities have allowed students to create a fascinating project they are interested in. The projects can be about history, art, video games, and many more. For one of my homework, I read many projects related to immersive realities lab for humanities which is consist of art, video games, philosophy, media, history, and more, but one of the projects I read was Dare to remember, a digital memorial of black Brooklyn that its work is about the memory traditions and respect for the black community in Brooklyn. This project is base on digital history in which provides history from the past that takes advantage of new communication on technology. What I understand from digital humanities is that it helps you study the humanities and people's activities throughout their life. It helps students create projects that are important to learn about the past, present, and future.

What is social media in education?

Since technology has been a big part of people in society, it has helped people found ways to communicate with others on daily basis. Social media is a platform where everyone is comfortable, people use social to help with their business, work, school education, curiosity. Not too long ago, social networking has been a helpful guide for schools' education. Before, electronic devices were banned from using in-class students, but now before the pandemic where schools were still active outside, schools had started to think another way about using social as a platform to educate students, which by the way they had control with. Due to the pandemic, teachers have given all the work through social networking and for some part it is useful. But what is really social media in education?

Today technology provides a lot of resources in schools education that can be accessible around the world. Moreover, such thing as digital humanities has also given students the opportunities to create and learn projects that are useful to them, and also a better way to communicate with others while having the advantages to learn new things. Even though educators and learners are trying to work through social networking which is a good thing, however, social networking also exposes students to difficult risks.

Some advantages of social media in education

  • Educational tools
  • Help with homework
  • Group partnership( which help students interact without not being in front of the class)
  • Students enhance teamwork and collaboration
  • Promote communication
  • Prepare students for the future
Some disadvantages of social media in education
  • Students spend more time researching on the internet instead of trying to work their brain
  • Posting unnecessary things that are not appropriate
  • It can cause cyberbullying
  • Students may become too lazy
  • Lack of ahead communication
As you can see social media is not all bad in education, it just that sometimes inappropriate to use in school. Moreover, it has done more positive things than negative regarding school education. The educational field has completely shifted ever since the internet and social media take part in which is also good things that help students find new resources and developed their knowledge.

Oral History

Oral History Blog Post Oral history is spoken history, people tell stories about their life while being recorded. I listen to many oral interviews about Holocaust survivors, how they were sent to the camp, and separated from their families. Listening to someone telling a story is fascinating, it also helps us learn how to listen and comprehend others. What I learn from these oral interviews is that listening and seeing someone speaking helps you see the facial expressions, the gestures, and the passion while interviewing that person. Besides, I only use recording someone or something on a matter that is not important. However, there is a difference while recording something that is useful and something that is not. I am not really experienced in recording oral history, but I did try it before, and I can say it was pretty amazing to listen to someone’s story. Furthermore, many devices can be used to record an interview, for example, there is an app called StoryCorps that I used to...
